Haut Comme 3 Pommes

The old captain

From the captain's perspective:

Many years before, the captain (Papi's character when he arrived on the island) had gathered a crew in search of the island, following rumors he had heard about a strange object which was hidden there. It was aboard a ship named Flounder that he reached it. But as the island approached, a storm erupted. The captain was experienced and respected by his men, the crew stayed calm.
After several hours of struggle, the ship ran aground on the coast. Many died but the mission seemed to be a success: they had found the island. The captain, confused by the loss of his ship, gathered the surviving sailors and some supplies rescued from the ship to explore the surroundings. They passed through a cave to reach the forest and on their way crossed signs of a civilization that had obviously been established there for centuries, which did not reassure them at all.
They quickly arrived at the side of a lake in the heart of the forest and decided to stop there to rest and pay homage to their dead people. The next day, they left the camp to the North. The further they advanced, the more ruins of this mysterious and ancient civilization they found. They ended up in an area between forest and beach where there was a huge tower of similar architecture and entered by passing under an arcade. At the top of it was a kind of altar covered with lotus flower (the same as they had found at the center of the lake). The captain approached it and picked up the artifact that was lying there. They found what they were looking for. The captain tested its power on a stone which immediately grew larger.
The crew's avidity couldn't be controled, they revealed their true nature at the sight of the artefect. The captain then understood his mistake... This power must not pass into the wrong hands. So he fled with the objet out of the tower, abandoning his crew. He shrinks the tower behind him, condemning the hapless trapped inside with cries of despair.
In the forest, the captain had to fight against the sailors remained behind, he crushed a man by enlarging a stone. He eliminated other men before running away. To save time, he enlarges some snails to cover him. Finally, once back in the cave, he caused a landslide blocking his pursuers in the forest and trapping himself on the beach.
The captain next found a place to set up camp. He survived by enlarging crabs, offering more food for several months. But some of them ran away and proliferated. The beach was therefore becoming dangerous and the loneliness weighed heavily on him. Years later, he decided to return to the tower to restore the artifact, which would be his final journey.
Using his power, he returned to the forest where he set up a new camp in the heights. The snails had proliferated in the same way as the crabs and the area had become even more dangerous. None of his old men had survived. He then went to the tower and found a nearby boat that wasn't there when he first came. Not far away, there was a tent in which lay the body of a young woman who had succumbed very recently. A baby was in his arms, very much alive. The captain saw in this child a future, a hope and a new goal.
He forgot about his first quest which was to bring back the artifact and he crossed the forest back. He found a small piece of beach that he secured, he had everything to live decently at hand. He then made the decision to do everything to give the child a future by exploring the island in search of a way out.
Finally the day came when the kid, older, wanted to leave, the captain turned, he became an old fisherman under the weight of time, now known as Papi. He had managed to find a way to leave but he had to test the child to check if he was ready. Thus began his real ultimate adventure.

From the crew's point of view:

Months before the captain had recruited them. He was a living legend, being part of his crew was a real honor as well as a promise of a rich treasure. Impossible to refuse. Everyone worshiped him.
The captain had heard of the island and the artifact on his first adventure when he was still a child. He didn't want to talk about it, this adventure had made him leave his home to face the rest of the world ...

As soon as they arrived on the outskirts of the island, a storm of incredible violence hit the ship which ran aground on the beach, many died, but they had succeeded. The captain guided them through the beach and then the forest where they rested. No one had any regrets, everyone saw only wealth and power.
They arrived at the tower, the further they advanced, the more there was signs of an ancient civilization. At the top of the tower was the altar with the famous artifact, the object of their quest, surrounded by some lotus flowers. Everyone cheered the captain when he made his speech. They had succeeded.
A sailor then asked how they were going to be rewarded. The captain explained to them that the reward was the journey itself. Wrong answer. The captain then saw the greed of the crew and fled. The crew felt betrayed and chased their former leader.
They chased him into the tower, but when the captain came out it trembled and shrank. Many succumbed. In the forest, the crew realized that the captain had mastered the object, they had no chance. The captain fled to the beach crushing sailors under stones and leaving giant snails in the road. He caused a landslide to block access to the beach and become out of reach.
The survivors gathered at the camp near the lake. A sailor went in search of survivors near the tower and others went to collect food. Impossible to leave by the coast next to the tower, too dangerous with the reefs, they were blocked. In addition, hunting and gathering food were perilous and many died as a result. But after several days of searching they found a very nutritious fruit in the west, but breaking its thorny shell took a lot of time and effort. They also found the lotus in the center of the lake, a very useful medicinal plant. Unfortunately, in the East there was another edible fruit, but protected by a system that made it impossible to pick it. They created a front post to the west from which a huge tree trunk grew as well and a campfire in the heart of the forest to not be lost even at night.
The days passed like this: hunting, gathering and surviving. Some still wanted to chase the captain, but it was wasted efforts. But if leaving the island seemed impossible, death became more and more rare.
As morale decreased, the camp was attacked by the giant snails that had proliferated. Few survivors, they gathered at the Western Outpost and set out in search of a safer place to make their new camp.
They finally found a secure and defensible place in the southwest, and settled there once the snails were out of reach. However, they ended up cornered once again. Trapped in their camp without being able to hunt. They died of hunger. No one survive.
